CIS for subcontractors

If money is taken off your pay under CIS, you could be owed a refund. We'll register you with HMRC, keep track of your deductions and claim back what you've overpaid through your tax return, or through your company payroll if you're limited. We can also help you apply for gross payment status.

What is CIS?

The Construction Industry Scheme is HMRC's system for taxing building work. Contractors take a deduction from subcontractors' pay and pass it to HMRC as an advance payment towards the subcontractor's tax.

When is the CIS return due?

Contractors must file a CIS return by the 19th of each month, covering the month to the 5th. If you paid no subcontractors, you may need to file a nil return or tell HMRC you're inactive. Late returns bring automatic penalties.

What are the CIS deduction rates?

20% for subcontractors registered with HMRC, 30% for those who aren't registered, and nothing for those with gross payment status.

Can I claim back CIS deductions?

Yes. Sole traders claim through their self assessment tax return, often getting a refund. Limited companies offset deductions against their payroll taxes. We'll make sure you get back what you're owed.

Do I need payroll if I'm the only director?

Often yes. Many directors pay themselves a small salary through payroll alongside dividends, as it can be tax-efficient and builds up State Pension. We'll set it up and run it for you.
