When is the self assessment deadline?

The online deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year on 5 April. That is also when you pay any tax you owe. Paper returns are due by 31 October.

Do I need to fill in a tax return?

You usually do if you're self-employed and earn over £1,000, rent out property, are a partner in a business, or have income that hasn't been taxed. If you're not sure, ask us and we'll check for you.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

HMRC charges a £100 penalty straight away, even if you owe no tax. More penalties and interest are added the longer it runs. If you're already late, talk to us and we'll get it filed quickly.

What do I need to give you?

Usually your income records, business expenses, bank interest, pension payments, any P60 or P45, and rental figures if you're a landlord. We'll send you a simple checklist so nothing is missed.

Does Making Tax Digital affect me?

If you're a sole trader or landlord with qualifying income over £50,000, it has applied since April 2026. The limit falls to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028. We can get you ready well before your start date.
